In April 1979, Julia Child supervised 20 amateur sous chefs at a Planned Parenthood Los Angeles fundraiser in the preparation of a lavish five-course dinner for 130 guests at the Ma Maison restaurant in Los Angeles. Guests paid from $125 - $1,000 apiece. Of the fundraiser, Ann Petroni, president of the affiliate stated,

For Sunday night's party, the volunteer cooking positions were restricted to men because we thought it was about time men enjoyed what they paid for."

When asked why Planned Parenthood had chosen Child as their chef Petroni stated,

"She believes in Planned Parenthood and what we stand for and is very supportive of what we do. Plus she has lots of fans. So many chefs are intimidating you can't relate to them. But I mean, Julia's a cult."

Following this fundraiser, Child conducted a series of four cooking demonstrations at the Riviera Country Club from April 13 - 15, 1979. The cooking demonstrations were also fundraisers for the Los Angeles Planned Parenthood affiliate.[1]
